English Communication Skills

– Featured Comments –

Years ago I worked for a prestigious software consulting firm in London. They hired a young man from India with a very impressive resume, and equally impressive verbal skills. Unfortunately, he knew absolutely nothing about computer programming, which is what he was hired to do. On his first day of work, he offered to pay another employee for doing his work, and spent the next few days talking to potential employers. He had added the name of the prestigious software firm to his (entirely fraudulent) resume. And he succeeded in finding a better job before his fraud was discovered. Presumably he continued this pattern and moved from firm to firm without ever doing any work.

I ran into the same person a few years later, this time in Amsterdam, where he had once again convinced someone to hire him based on his claim to skills that he didn’t have. This time the employer figured out his game, and fired him on his first day of employment. I don’t know what happened to him afterwards.

I assume the call center employees who lack basic English communication skills as well as any knowledge of the product they are supposed to be supporting have similarly lied on their resumes. When I have to deal with one of these individuals, I usually address them in Hindi or Urdu, rather than try to decipher their English, or have my words repeatedly misunderstood. But I would never presume to put either of these languages on my resume.

@Doleres and her fellow compatriots: I am from India, I am with you. Kindly ask your government to stop immigration and not to issue visa to Indians, even for any kind of tourism. I had never read a stupid article than this about Indian education. I sincerely doubt the intention of this piece. It rants about lack of English communication skills among other short comings. As a matter of fact the US, both its system and its businesses, unashamedly steal very highly skilled and precious human resources at incredibly low costs. It is going on for several decades. Most affected are the least develped countries and developing nations. India is one among the victims since 1960s. I need engineers to run my business. I will happily employ any engineer qualified for it, at reasonable wages. Unfortunately I don’t get even failed graduates or diploma holders, who can be trained for the specific needs of my company. Indian companies (who work for green backs) practice slavery by making our people to work developed countries at very low wages through their and other MNCs. Most goods and services are outsourced so that Americans continue their easy and high living standards. In India, gas costs 3 times higher than the US and yet the Indians earn wages in cents per hour! The writer, at the best, has little knowledge on India and her needs. It is western point of view soaked with slavery in mind and action.
